The Bolek Difference – Chapter 1

When "Getting a Little Mean" Is Actually Just Getting Results

"You're getting a little mean."

Yep. A client actually said this to me once. We were deep in the trenches of a multi-million dollar grant application, deadline looming, and there I was – pushing, prodding, and probably sounding a tad bit like a drill sergeant with a to-do list.

(I've also actually been described as a drill sergeant, but that's a story for another day!)

It was one of those half-joking, half-serious comments that lands somewhere between a laugh and a truth bomb. And you know what? That moment has stuck with me ever since. Not because it hurt my feelings (okay, maybe a little), but because of how I responded – and what it revealed about what we grant writers really do.

Here's the thing: this wasn't our first grant together. We had a great relationship, solid rapport, and plenty of shared wins under our belts. But in that pressure-cooker moment, with critical information still missing and time running out, the niceties went by the wayside.

Let's Talk About What You're Really Hiring Me For

I reminded him (gently, I promise) that he didn't hire me for my sparkling personality or my ability to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy during stressful times. Don't get me wrong – I'm delightful! But that's not why organizations bring Bolek Grant Writing on board.

You hire me to help you win grant funding. Period.

And when you're investing in our expertise, I'm going to do everything humanly possible to work toward that positive outcome. Will I be a little rough around the edges sometimes? Yep! Do I always say things in the most diplomatic way? Nope. But do I know grants inside and out? You bet I do.

So when we're approaching a deadline and I'm still missing vital information that could make or break your application, darn straight I'm going to push you. While you're juggling seventeen other priorities (because let's face it, nonprofit leaders wear approximately 47 hats), my #1 priority in that moment is crystal clear: you, your organization, and the people whose lives will be changed by the funding we're working to secure.

The Weight of No Guarantees

Here's what keeps me up at night: I've never been about wasting anyone's money. Not a single penny. And that's tough in a profession where I can never – and I mean never – guarantee a positive funding outcome.

For someone with my Type A, control-loving, outcome-obsessed personality? That's basically my own personal nightmare fuel. But I'm not apologizing for it. I'm owning it.

Because here's the truth about us grant writers: We're part detective (hunting down the perfect funding opportunities), part therapist (talking you off the ledge when self-doubt creeps in), part translator (turning your brilliant but sometimes scattered ideas into funder-friendly language), part project manager (wrangling deadlines, documents, and data like our lives depend on it), part cheerleader (celebrating every small win along the way), and yes – part drill sergeant when the situation calls for it.

And sure, we can get a little "mean" sometimes. But it's not because we're actually mean. It's because we're not just sharing your goal – we're practically in charge of that goal. And failure? That's not even on our bingo card. (Seriously, I checked. It's not there.)

The Bolek Difference: Passion Meets Pushiness (In the Best Way)

Look, I could be all sunshine and rainbows while your grant application goes down in flames. I could nod along and say "that's fine" when it's actually not fine at all. I could let things slide and hope for the best.

But that's not what you need. And it's definitely not what you're paying for.

What you need is someone who cares so much about your success that they'll risk being called "a little mean" to make sure you're putting your absolute best foot forward. Someone who understands that behind every grant application is a community that needs services, kids who need programs, families who need support, or individuals who need a helping hand.

When the stakes are that high, a little pushiness isn't just acceptable – it's necessary.

So yes, I might get intense as we approach deadlines. I might send that third follow-up email asking for information. I might push back on language that won't resonate with funders. I might challenge you to think bigger or dig deeper or clarify that program outcome one more time.

But at the end of the day? That's not mean. That's me caring deeply about your mission and refusing to let anything less than your best work go out the door.

And honestly? I wouldn't have it any other way. 💪

(Besides, once we win that grant? I'm nothing but sunshine, celebration, and "I told you we could do this!" energy. So it all balances out.)
